Fifty-five years in the trades: the story behind the oldest brand in the family
B. Carlson opened in Albuquerque in 1971. Most of what has kept it going is unremarkable, which is rather the point.
Seven companies, five states, and a record that starts in 1971. B. Carlson has been heating, cooling and plumbing homes in Albuquerque for longer than most of the people who work there have been alive.
Where it starts
Every long-running trades business has the same origin story with different names in it: someone good at the work, a truck, and a phone number that got passed around. What separates the ones that last is not the start. It is the second decade.
What keeps a name alive
Talk to owners who have made it past thirty years and they describe the same unglamorous things:
- Showing up when you said you would, in a town small enough that people notice.
- Pricing the same way for a repeat customer as for a first-time one.
- Training a replacement before you need them.
- Being willing to say a repair is not worth doing.
A local name is not marketing. In this trade it is fifty years of people telling their neighbour who to call.
Where it sits now
B. Carlson still trades under its own name, in its own market, run by people who live there. What changed when it joined the group is everything a customer never sees — the reporting, the recruiting, the software and the month-end close.
That is the arrangement we would want if it were our name on the truck.
